DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr. 2, 2012-- DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA), a leading provider of kidney care services that is committed to improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), today announced that its Texas clinics had generated $93,000 in charitable contributions in the state through its "DaVita Way of Giving" initiative.
As part of DaVita's® larger national charitable giving efforts, teammates at each DaVita clinic were invited to request contributions for the 501(c)(3) charity of their choice. Clinics were also allowed to team up on behalf of a single charity to request larger contributions. More than 400 charities received contributions ranging from $1,000 to over $40,000.
Texas charities received the second highest total of any state in the nation. Many of the donations were accompanied by community service projects performed by DaVita teammates.
"We're so happy to be able give back to the communities that support us and our patients," said Chakilla Robinson White, DaVita division vice president. "With this financial commitment and all of the volunteer hours DaVita teammates give to local charities, we're making a real difference in Texas."
On Saturday, March 31, DaVita teammates in Houston partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a walking trail around a retention pond in the Milby Park neighborhood of Houston's northeast side. The volunteer group also worked in the neighboring Wood Glen area to replace trees ravaged by past storms and to build storage sheds for homeowners. No-cost blood pressure screening and nutritional education were available to volunteers and neighborhood residents during the volunteer event.
"DaVita does dialysis, but DaVita is not about dialysis. DaVita is about life," said Robinson White. "We just want to make life a little better for our neighbors in the communities where we live and work."
Houston-area nonprofits receiving financial contributions included Bay Area Turning Point (serving survivors of family violence and sexual assault), Houston Food Bank and Northwest Assistance Ministries.
Dallas/Plano-area nonprofits who received donations included the Parker Volunteer Fire Department, Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County and the Genesis Women's Shelter of Garland.
San Antonio- and Austin-area nonprofits benefiting included the San Antonio AIDS Foundation, Operation Blue Santa (sponsored by the Austin Police Department), and the Juvenile Outreach Vocational and Educational Network.
